Sypheros 8 - Sypheros 19, YK 998
Since your arrival back in Sharn on 8 Sypheros (an autumn month equivalent to October), about two weeks have passed. Miraculously, in the rain-soaked city of Sharn, the last five days have been sunny, although storm clouds gathered once more a day or two ago, and the rain will almost certainly return soon.
Viorr hired a House Tharashk half-orcish inquisitive named Rar'ashak Duanda to locate and return William's body. After two weeks, Viorr has discontinued his service, as Duanda was unable to find the body. His final report to you indicated that members of the Emerald Claw had been seen by passers-by taking the body away mere minutes after it hit the ground, killing two members of the guard in the process. Duanda tracked down the specific band of the Claw that had snatched the body in Korranberg, just as they attempted to cross the border into Darguun, but they managed to battle him off long enough to sacrifice their own lives rather than giving up further information. He tried to engage a cleric friend in the area to speak with dead, but they had been protected from such intrusions by powerful necromantic magic. He tried to use his dragonmark ability to locate the body, and it was protected by magic as well. Duanda and Viorr express their condolences, but they believe your friend's body to be in the hands of the Emerald Claw.
To add insult to this particular injury, roughly three days after you got back to Sharn, you recieved a summons from Sharri d'Deneith, one that came with several Deneith blademarks should you decide it was a summons to refuse. When you met with Sharri (either willingly or after taking a beating from the trained soldiers), she expressed that she held you responsible for William's death, dragging him into a life of combat that she had expressly forbidden him to engage in. It wasn't a debate, and she shut down all of your arguments that William had willingly, perhaps even a bit overzealously, sought out that adventure. She warned you not to expect friendship from House Deneith, and that the Wandering Wolves would be subject to scrutiny from her house. If she can find a way in the future to hurt you without exposing herself politically, by providing support to your enemies or revealing any illegal activities you're engaged in, rest assured that she will.
Your shop, Gareth's Gear, managed pretty well in its first month of operation. Under the daily management of Jalis ir'Mroranon, a female dwarf with ties to the Mroranon mining clan (whose father is an ambassador in Sharn), you broke even in the very first month and made a tidy sum selling your adventuring spoils. With Tock taking up full-time duties at Gareth's as in-house artificer and crafter of potions, scrolls and wondrous items, the reputation of the shop can only grow.
You have all been forced to curtail your daily duties with Morgrave University thanks to increase roles in adventuring and duties to your Houses, guilds or the shop. Each of you remains on the list for future endeavors in Xen'drik, but your teaching or assisting duties have been severely scaled back in favor of less nomadic help. Figure about one day of each week is now spent at your Morgrave jobs. For Brand, one day organizing and redrawing maps. For Pel, one day in the library sorting books and providing assistance. For Lysander, a weekly music and storytelling class. Luggoth and Kanatash, of course, are not currently gainfully employed.
This also means it was time to move house, out of the dorms of Morgrave. The most logical thing to do would be to either stay at the Guildhouse (5 sp/day each, basically 7 gp for the duration of your stay in Sharn this time) or, if you want a more permanent home, you could rent an average residence for 1d4x10 gp/month or an upscale residence for 2d8x10 gp/month. You could go cheaper, but you're very likely to be robbed or killed in such a neighborhood, given your apparent wealth and despite your formidable skills. You'll each need to let me know your thoughts on where your character is living.
Tock is immune to these changes, of course. Retiring from adventuring, even with his increased work at the shop, leaves him plenty of time to apprentice and teach at Morgrave and he'll continue to live there. However, on 12 Sypheros, four days after returning, he is attacked by a group of students at Morgrave, who seem to be under the influence of someone or something else and don't remember their actions after the attack is stopped by Tock and Morgrave guards. When Tock checks back in on his quarters, he finds them ransacked, although a quick overview indicated that nothing was taken.
During your time in Sharn, the celebration of Wildnight (18-19 Sypheros) will take place. This is a festival during which the Fury, Sovereign of Passions and Madness, reaches the height of her power, and the streets fill with raucous revelry and wild celebrations that last well into the night. Being minor celebrities, each of you has the opportunity to attend several parties as well as just enjoy yourselves on the streets of Sharn. Think of it as Mardi Gras for Eberron, with the same downsides of riots, brawls and crimes of passion mixed in with the hedonistic fun.
Brand - No further contact from your father, although you did exchange general pleasantries and catching up messages on a weekly basis with your mother via Sivis message stations. You found a fair bit in common with Luggoth, given his devotion to the wild, and I imagine you would have helped him find a place to live in Sharn.
Beyond deciding where to live and working two days out of the fourteen, Brand has a pretty free schedule, probably the most open of the entire group. Let me know what you want to do. If you want to take a trip out to the Eldeen Reaches during this time, you can, and that'll take up about seven or eight of your days (two or three of them spent in the Reaches). It's up to you and Luggoth as to whether or not he'd come with you to see the area, which seems suited to his sensibilities as well.
Kanatash - I really need you to write up some background on this character so I have some sense of what he's doing between adventures and what kind of subplots I should be coming up with for him. In the meantime, he needs to decide where to stay and what he wants to do with his downtime in Sharn. There is a Riedran Embassy in the city, and the ambassador often speaks at Morgrave University, where he is well-liked (and well-guarded, before you get any ideas). There are about 1,600 Kalashtar in Sharn (out of roughly 200,000 total population), most of whom live in Overlook, an apartment district in Upper Dura. There, you'll find tailors and restaurants catering to Adaran styles, average or poor residences (Kanatash is one of the few exceptions who could live poor, because he's among a racially friendly populace) and two shrines, The Gathering Light (martial arts/meditation) and The Shrine of il-Yannah (run by a powerful psion named Havakhad and devoted to worship of the Path of Light).
It's up to you whether you live in this area or whether you want to stick closer to your new friends.
Lysander - If he so wishes, Lysander can see Arenydee up to three times during these two weeks. Each time, she will suggest a cautious exchange of information that doesn't endanger either of you too much, along with a meal, then a play, then... well, it would be the third date, if you get my meaning.
As I emailed you privately, your House had one wish for you to engage in these two weeks, you can email me if you don't remember.
Given his adventuring duties, Lysander has not been able to take any long-term gigs in town. However, he has been quite popular nightly at various night spots, as much for his tales of adventure in many lands as for his skillful music. By taking 10 on his performances, Lysander can easily make anywhere from 3-30 sp per day. Given that he probably has about 10 performances during this time, figure that he can easily cover the cost of staying at the guild hall and your dates with Arenydee, or pay for an average residence and burn about 5-10 of your personal gold for those dates. If you want to actually roll the performances or roll the money made, we can certainly do that before the game starts and you can know exactly what you've made and what you've had to spend on lodgings. In fact, I'm willing to trust you if you want to make 10 performance rolls and post them in comments, or let me know if you'd rather take 10 on each performance and I can roll up the gold you earn and post that in the comments.
Lysander has an encounter on 14 Sypheros when he detects that he is being followed. When he takes a detour to try and trap his pursuer, the pursuit vanishes.
Luggoth - As with Kanatash, I really need some background ASAP so I can know what to work with as far as subplots go. As far as basics, though, shifters don't have neighborhoods of their own in Sharn, but most of them are concentrated in Lower Northedge, Middle Tavick's Landing and the Depths. There are only about 6,500 in the city total.
So let me know what you decide about where to live (and deciding to live outside the city is possible, but would make you hard to reach as part of the group, so it's probably not a good idea) and if you want to seek out any kind of work while you're living in Sharn.
Pel - Given the war between The Tyrants and the Daask, not to mention your own shaky standing in the Tyrants, it's probably a good idea to keep a low profile and maintain a cover identity or two while in Sharn. Your monthly contact with Xain at the Cracked Mirror is uneventful, as you pass on information gathered during the Whisper of the Vampire's Blade (including information on Viorr, Lucan, Arenydee and the Soul Blade, I presume) and he warns you that your name, along with the name of the Wandering Wolves, has been mentioned more than once in connection with the Emerald Claw in the city.
In fact, you have a run-in with a pair of well-armed and combat-trained half-orcs during Wildnight who provide you with several bruises before you run them off. You're not sure if this is related to the Tyrants, the Daask, the Emerald Claw or something else.
That's it. You also are free to buy items (both magic and mundane) and do whatever else you want. Use the comments below to let me know anything you want to do in your downtime and to answer any questions raised above, especially where you decide to live and what (in general) you decide to do.

Duty to house, accomplished.
I will see the girl all three times and spend as much gold as is necessary to prove my affection and exchange info with her.
I will also rent a swanky, upscale apartment, marking my improving station.
Performance rolls--29,25,14,20,27,15,29,18,17,23, no nats no 1's.
I will be trying to get involved with the Circle. And I will begin digging up dirt on William's mother for a satire and insurance. I will subtly begin telling William's story with the aim of building him a hero despite 'those who tried to hold him back.' We want him bigger than he was and kind of a proto-Wolf symbol of greatness.
Also, I start trying to trace back who might be undermining our reputations.
I would like to commission several silver coins/medallions bearing a running wolf on one side and a double W rune on the back. It's time to go to work on our legend and build up some popularity among the commoners. I would like to leave the Silver Wolves anywhere we go that we want a rumor to spread. Actually, I think platinum would be better, get me a price!
Let me suggest that one of us begin to think about building/buying a domicile that is defensible, tricksy, and easy to escape from. Later.
Lysander goes out and secures himself a spacious three bedroom apartment with an open kitchen and dining area as well as a study which he can use for rehearsal as well as small (groups of 2-5) performances. The apartment is in Platinate (Upper Menthis), one of the most desirable residental districts, and is full of retired adventurers, eccentric collectors of antiquities and a few well-heeled and famous performers. (Menthis is the hub of Sharn's entertainment industry). The rental of this fine home costs him 80 gp/month. Buying it outright would cost 20,000 gp, so I don't see him "going condo" anytime real soon.
Arenydee and Lysander enjoy three nights together (and one morning), increasingly intimate in each one. On Sypheros 10, you enjoy an excellent dinner at Sannid's Restaurant in Platinum Heights (Middle Central Plateau), enjoying its spicy Brelish fare (although Arenydee opts for their Aundairian veal in tomato gravy) and a selection of three wines, including a rare Aerenal elven wine. That particular date costs you 10 gp.
On Sypheros 15, you attend dinner and a show at your previous place of employment, Gailan's, where the cast remaining put on a good show and the dinner, while not as fantastic as Sannid's, is certainly good. Afterwards, at Arenydee's suggestion, you stop by the Lucky Nines casino in the Firelight district of Lower Menthis and play a few games of Three Dragon Ante which more than makes up for the cost of the show and earns you each 5 gp in addition.
On Sypheros 19, on one of the sunniest and most beautiful days Sharn has seen all year, the two of you attend dinner at the exclusive Azure Gateway Restaurant in the floating Skyway, getting there by way of giant owls arranged by Arenydee. You enjoy an excellent meal (which costs you 20 gp), then a moonlit flight back to your new apartment, where the two of you enjoy a long evening and a pleasant, extended morning.
Also during this time, you perform six times in different theatres in Menthis as the opening act, three times at your regular watering hole, The Broken Anvil (or maybe the Drunken Dragon, see below) and one exclusive performance commissioned by Elaydren d'Cannith and her beau, Hetris d'Cannith, for a party at the Cannith enclave in Dragon Towers.
Your performances in Menthis are mostly memorable, with a few that critics rate merely "great" and only one that is enjoyable, but forgettable. The performances at The Broken Anvil land mostly in the enjoyable category, thanks largely to the quality of the audience and the venue. Your performance at Cannith, boosted just slightly by a circumstance bonus from accompanying musicians and an excellent venue (+1 circumstance bonus) is extraordinary, and you have to turn down several job offers as personal musician or storyteller from nobles in attendance. All told, these performances net you 30 gp.
Adding up your gambling wins, rental fee, dating costs and performances, your TOTAL GOLD EXPENDITURE is 75 gp. (Nice to be a rich, experienced adventurer instead of a 1st-level pauper, isn't it?)
Lysander finds that the Drunken Dragon in Upper Dura, in addition to being owned by a former member of the Clifftop Adventurers' Guild and close to the guild hall, is an Outpost of the Circle, and a donation of 5 pp gets him a membership in the organization. If you'd like, you can become a regular at the Drunken Dragon instead of the Broken Anvil... up to you whether you'd like to convince the other Wolves to make that their regular drinking spot as well.
You don't have a lot of time to dig up dirt on Sharri d'Deneith, especially as she lives in Karrnath and thus doesn't have a lot of local ties. It seems from a cursory inspection that she's a difficult target, a reserved member of a powerful house who lost her husband and sons in the war. A satire would have to be very careful indeed, or runs the very real risk of backfiring on you.
Silver Wolves would cost the equivalent of a gp each, to cover the cost of the silver and the cost of the inscribing. Buying in bulk would mean the inscribing would be cheaper. If you commission 100 of them, it will cost 80 gp... 200 of them 150 gp... 500 of them 200 gp... or 1000 of them 300 gp. Keep in mind, Silver Wolves would still spend like silver, so they'd be worth 1/5 gp each.
Platinum Wolves would cost you 8 gp each, or: 750 gp for 100, 1200 gp for 200, 2500 gp for 500 or 5500 gp for 1000 of them. As you can see, platinum might still be a bit out of your price range, but they'd still spend like platinum pieces, worth 5 gp each.
My primary goal is to continue Whitehearth's training. The wolf has proven to be a loyal and valuable companion and it's important to respect him as a member of the Wandering Wolves' pack.
It takes 1 week to teach an animal a new trick. Since I was training him as much as possible during the pursuit of Lucan, I'm hoping that I can teach him 3 new tricks. Also, upon closer inspection of the skill description, I've discoved that his 2 bonus tricks are free and do not require a Handle Animal check or time to teach. That and 3 new ones will bring me up to 6 of the 7 he can learn at this point. He already knows Attack. I'd like to take Track and Down as his bonus feats (I'm happy to know that I didn't completely screw up by having him track since I could've chosen that as a free trick). I have to make a Handle Animal check to teach the other 3, but I get an additional +4 circumstance bonus for my animal companion. I'll go for Guard (DC 20), Heel (DC 15) and Defend (DC 20) in that order and time allowing.
Handle Animal checks: 21, 21, 24
If possible, I'd like to work on training Whitehearth at a House Vadalis outpost since they also come from the Eldeen Reaches. Perhaps I can help out with the other animals when I'm giving Whitehearth a break. Ultimately I'd like to develop a contact in House Vadalis who might be able to help us secure mounts in cities across the land. Perhaps they could also arrange for our magebred horses (including my personal steed, Landstrider) to be returned to us whenever a caravan comes to Sharn from Zilagro. In the future, I imagine it may be necessary to retreive our mounts from other far-flung locations. Also, who knows what kind of information a stablehand might hear from a noble who's just ridden all night on an important mission. If you don't teleport or come in via Lightining Rail or Airship, the stable is always the first stop.
If he's interested, I'll definitely hang with Luggoth at night and during Wildnight, introducing him to any barmaids and female stablehands I know (or any other women who don't mind the smell of animal on a man). With our charismas being 11 and 12, I'm not which of us is technically the wingman, but I'll be sure to help him out where I can and hope for the same from him.
If they can get away with it, Luggoth and Kanatash might consider hiring themselves out to the Defender's Guild or Blademarks Guild for local security work. Maybe they can garner a little goodwill in House Deneith before Sharri d'Deneith connects them to the Wandering Wolves.
I'll be happy to stay in the Guildhouse during this time. No apartment is going to be safe and there are worse places to stay than in a building full of generally good-aligned (or, at least, not evil) adventurers. I agree with Lysander that we need to find more secure and defensible lodgings, as we seem to be making more enemies than friends. Clearly someone is looking for the schema that lives in Pel's haversack.
Also, I'm all in favor of the Wandering Wolves coinage. Perhaps we could secure a bunch of silver to use in lower class settings and a few platinum for those times when we really want to make a statement.
Oh, I forgot to mention one thing. I'd like to spend 2,000 gold having my masterwork short sword enchanted for Shock.
Luggoth will purchase a cheap apartment in one of the seedier communities (I assume this would be The Depths). Due to his distrust of authority (in particular the Silver Flame), he would be more comfortable there.
In his down time, he will offer himself up for work such as body guarding and the like, while at the same time seeking out other shifters, making sure their bonds are strong and that they are ready to fight for their freedoms and lives if another Inquisition comes.
Pel will secure an apartment, upscale of course, in the identity of Malfiore' LeQuande, a wealthy traveling spice merchant(to justify long and frequent absences.) Funny Lysander should mention security (we seem to be thinking a lot alike lately) as that's just what Pel had in mind. The apartment should have ample storage area (for the "spices"), huge closets, rooftop access and good eyelines. Once moved in, Pel will spend some time beefing up the security, in particular using his Craft Traps skill (+13), and scoping out the neighbors and the hood. A long term plan might be to run off some of the neighbors with the smell of the "spices", and buy them out cheap.
An aged, blind, daft, scabby, half-orcish hobo appears sporadically in the Lower Dura and other seedy climes, begging coppers and overhearing conversations.
And of course, plots and machinations.
It looks like Whitehearth, inside of a few weeks, is almost as trained as an animal can be.
Brand does a lot of his training at the House Valadis stable and hostelry in Terminus (Lower Tavick's Landing). He befriends a horse trainer named Lionel d'Valadis, who sees a lot of the travelers coming in through Sharn. Brand can make Lionel one of his contacts, if you wish. Valadis is tight with House Orien, and Terminus is the home of the Orien Lightning Rail station for Sharn, so there might be some cause for nerves with Brand, but it's worth the risk to get the finest animal training facilities.
You and Luggoth can probably have some pretty wild times during Wildnight, as I expect Brand knows where to find the wilder parts of Sharn. I wonder if Luggoth's dislike of the Silver Flame, and rather biased view of the religion, might rub off on Brand as well?
Brand's stay in the Guildhouse will cost him 7 gp, so make sure and mark that off.
The Depths are sealed off, and more or less a series of dungeons, so Luggoth is probably settled in either Lower Dura (Callestan, home of the Broken Anvil tavern and center of illegal commerce) or Lower Northedge (in Stoneyard, with a large shifter community). Dura doesn't have as many shifters, but Northedge does have a Silver Flame chapel elsewhere in the district, while Dura probably doesn't. Let me know which one, either way it winds up costing you 2 gp/month.
Luggoth probably has a little trouble adapting to urban life in Sharn, bumping heads with the Watch for your agitation against the Silver Flame (although you do have freedom of speech in Breland, so you probably don't actually get arrested or anything). Brand will no doubt serve as a useful guide to being a creature of the wild in civilization.
Malfiore' LeQuande acquires a high rise two-bedroom apartment with a spacious greeting and entertainment room, a walk-in pantry with a lock and a beautiful view of the lower city in Upper Central Plateau's Mithral Tower. He gets a steal on this place, with Pel having heard about it through a recent burglary by the Tyrants that drove the previous inhabitant off, and it costs him only 20 gp/month.
Pel spends four days as Merchant LeQuande acquiring his apartment, two days in his identity at Morgrave in the library (got a name/race for that one?), six days as a scabby half-orcish hobo begging in Lower Dura (during which he makes his monthly contact at The Cracked Mirror) and probably two days as Pel, talking with Lysander and hanging around in the Guild Hall with the rest of the Wolves.
I would definitely like to make Lionel d'Vadalis a contact. I'll keep an eye out for any trouble from House Orien and watch over my shoulder for anyone I might know from my uncle's slice of that empire. To be safe, I'll go by the name "Lycos" while I'm at the stables.
After spending time with Luggoth, I am definitely suspicious of teh Silver Flame. I respect their battle against evil but I'm concerned that they approach their faith with too much zeal with regards to the Shifters. I'm not a fan of organized religion as organization leads to politics, which leads to the loss of individual rights. I'd rather spend time with someone from the Silver Flame than the Emerald Claw, but I'd be just as happy without either one poking its nose into my business.
Pel says to Brand, "If the zeal Silver Flame disturbs you, brother, as it well should, perhaps you should consider the teachings of the Traveler who tells us that no sentient creature is exclusively evil, except in so far as it chooses to be. You might find such wisdom more in line your temperment."
Luggoth, as another follower of The Traveller, supports Pel's claims.
And Luggoth will take up residence in Lower Dura. The rough and rowdy nature appeals to his wild instincts, and he's cocky enough to belive no harm will befall him there.
I respect the Traveller and his wisdom. I cannot believe that Pel happened upon the path of the Traveller by happenstance.
However, I'll gladly stick to the ways of Balinor, who teaches us to live in harmony with the natural world and to remember that in nature, there is always something that can make you its prey, so treat your own prey with respect and honor its flesh and pelt as a sacrifice to Balinor when it cooks in your belly and covers your skin.
