Ravenloft: Fortune Telling

"The tome you seek holds knowledge of the ancient and knowledge of the land. Seek it where the river flies."

"If you find the tome and delve into its secrets, you'll discover the source of the lord's strength. If you read it carefully, you may also discover how to rob him of that strength."

"Your quest is doomed. You must find the three defiled places described in the tome. At each fane, you must kill the guardian and place the guardian's body in the shrine."

One of the fanes is in a swamp, one is in an area to the north

History: Some might say it was destiny that Drogen became an Exorcist of the Silver Flame. Both of his parents were devoted members of the Flame, his father Markosh a powerful paladin and his mother Arnyana quite a strong exorcist herself. Long before they were married, the two of them were part of a band of warriors who put an end to evil spirits and demons throughout Khorvaire. Eventually, working so closely together and finding common bonds in faith, they decided to marry.

Unfortunately, for Markosh, giving in to love was a break in his armor of perfect faith. He became susceptible to outside influence. One of the more powerful devils whose plans he had thwarted began a slow, systematic process of revenge, exploiting that break in the armor. He preyed on Markosh's fears for his wife and unborn child, and on little jealousies Markosh had about his other comrades-in-arms.

Markosh was tricked by the devil into seeing one of his comrades, an exorcist named Theros, as a rival. He became obsessed with the notion that Arnyana was cheating on him. That perhaps the baby growing inside her wasn't even his. He kept these thoughts to himself, sure that he was going mad, and the devil continued to feed them.

Drogen was born in Flamekeep, and for a short time, his parents were happy. Then they were called back into duty alongside Theros and the rest. They had discovered an outpost of The Lords of Dust just outside The Demon Wastes, and they were going to destroy it. When they got there, however, a devil took possession of Theros and began confirming Markosh's worst fears. Theros told him that he and Arnyana had conspired to lure him out to this remote place to kill him so that they could be together. Markosh, furious, killed Theros. He realized what he had done too late, and disappeared into the Demon Wastes, abandoning his wife, his son and his faith.

Arnyana had a heavy heart, but she returned to her responsibility and raised Drogen. He had a natural talent for the same skills she and Theros had displayed, and given Markosh's actions, rumors began to float about that perhaps Theros had been the father. Eventually, these lies took their toll on the already heart-broken Arnyana, and she hung herself a month before Drogen's 16th birthday, before he was accepted into the priesthood of the Flame.

Shamed by his past, Drogen abandoned his family name, becoming known only as Drogen of Flamekeep. In his 20th year, a mysterious man approached him while he and his schoolmates were on a trip to Aundair. Once he had gotten Drogen alone, he told him that he was his father, and he told him of the devils that had corrupted and tricked him. Drogen was horrified. He was even more horrified when Markosh said that he had joined the Lords of Dust, and that their faith was a joke. He had come back to recruit his son, bring him into the fold. Shaken, Drogen told him the man he needed to get some of his things and that he'd meet him back in a week.

A week later, when Drogen returned along with powerful warriors from the Church, the man never showed up. One who had lived so long among lies could easily spot the deception of a 20-year-old man of faith.

Now 23 and a powerful exorcist in his own right, Drogen has sworn to destroy any and all extradimensional evil, and he hopes one day to be able to find and destroy the creature that once was his father, as well as the devils that destroyed his family.

While investigating Castle Ravenloft in Karrnath alongside a Silver Flame strike force, he bonded with the holy symbol of Ravenloft. Unfortunately, shortly after he began using it, he fell to Strahd in vampiric wolf form. Fortunately, Ylo, another cleric of the Flame, prevented him from rising as a vampire.

Upcoming Schedule - February through April

Schedule time is here again! This is all maybe a little more tentative than usual, as Mat (our fearless Cthulhu GM) has potential work overload, and I am going to be stressed and overloaded as well. I think almost everybody on this blog knows already, but for the two or three of you who don't, I am buying the Round Rock Dragon's Lair, and if all goes as planned (keep your fingers crossed) the purchase will take place on February 19th. I plan to lose the rest of my hair from stress by the end of the week. So anyway, there's every possibility that I might have to bail on a February or March game, but I *think* I'll still be able to (and probably really need to) game.

At any rate, as always, folks let me know if there are changes that need to be made to the schedule. I'm assuming Ravenloft's first arc will be five sessions, if it's more or less we'll move Eberron until the first arc is done. And as with last month, I'm forecasting further out, even though I'm sure there will be changes between now and April.

February 2nd - Character Building - Ravenloft
February 9th - Expedition to Castle Ravenloft (First Story Arc)
February 16th - Expedition to Castle Ravenloft (First Story Arc)
February 23rd - Poker Game

March 2nd - No Gaming - STAPLE!
March 9th - Expedition to Castle Ravenloft (First Story Arc)
March 16th - Expedition to Castle Ravenloft (First Story Arc)
March 23rd - Expedition to Castle Ravenloft (First Story Arc)
March 30th - Poker Game

April 6th - Eberron: The Demons' Prophecy Part One
April 13th - Eberron: The Demons' Prophecy Part Two
April 20th - Poker Game
April 27th - Eberron: The Demons' Prophecy Part Three

Figure in May, we'll finish up Eberron, have a poker game and then start either Chris's teenage delinquent Champions game or, if that's not ready, go back for another round of Ravenloft. What say ye?

History: From the journal of Oren Ghastor:
Many of my race call me traitor. Many of my faith call me abomination. Too many others are ready to look at only what lies on the outside and judge, when the true nature of good and evil is underneath the flesh and bone, in the hearts and minds of others. My heart and mind are good, and pure, and true. This I know, and this I have dedicated my life to.

My life before the Silver Flame is so long ago, so alien to me, that it might as well not exist at all. Indeed, I don't remember my parents. I grew up in a Silver Flame monastery, part of the Order of the Argent Fist, raised by the monks there. When I was old enough to begin asking questions about why I was different, they told me the story of how I came there. That two shifters, a man and a woman, stumbled into the range of the sentries. That when they reached them, the shifters were dead of a variety of wounds, but they had a living, if badly wounded, baby with them. The monks took me in and prayed for me, believing that I would never survive. Not only did I survive, I manifested a patch of silver fur in the shape of a flame on my back. They viewed this as a sign, and from the moment I was old enough, they began teaching me.

Some of my first words were a request to become a Seeker of the Argent Fist. It is my calling, and I know that I have a great destiny. I am the Silver Flame's weapon against evil. But I am also a messenger, one of a few who can bridge the gap between my race and my faith. If more shifters knew the true danger the lycanthropic invasion presented, they wouldn't judge the actions of the Inquisition quite so harshly. By the same token, if those more fanatical proponents of the religion could only see that there is a difference between being touched by the beast and being a beast, they would realize that shifters are no more inherently evil or wicked than men.

It is my destiny to seek out evil and destroy it. Whether the danger be undead, mad warforged, corrupt humans or vicious tainted beasts, I will be ready to meet it, with fist and arrows and shurikens.

Oren died in battle with giants and a hag who was one of the Ravenloft Fanes. The hag killed him with her final attack before her companions destroyed it.

Hey, everybody. I just ordered Expedition to Castle Ravenloft off of Amazon. It's an update of the old Ravenloft module, designed for use as a one-off adventure or a campaign. How about, after we have our next Eberron adventure, I take a shot at DM'img, take you guys through this bastard? Sound cool?
