Eberron Adventure: One Month Passes...

26 Vult - 28 Zarantyr, YK 998-999

The Night of Long Shadows (26-28 Vult) was one of the worst in recent memory. As predicted by what the Wolves had learned prior to the fall of 26 Vult, the Daask had been planning to use these dark days to launch an attack on The Boromar Clan. Over the course of three days, bloody gang warfare erupted in Sharn. It was at its worst in the lower districts, but it wasn't uncommon to see a spark of violence, an assassination or a gang of monsters even at the higher levels of the city. Innocents were caught in the crossfire, and worse, deliberately targeted for the monstrous appetites of some of the monsters in from Droaam who had come to help the Daask.

During the first night, when the only indications that anything was wrong were the loud, bestial howls in the distance, Malfiore' LeQuande had two visitors in his penthouse. An older gentleman and middle aged woman knocked on his door in the middle of the night. Anyone nosing around would hear only their claim of being restauranteurs, seeking shelter with the man who had once helped them deliver exotic spices to their foreign clients. Malfiore, of course, knew that like himself, these two were not what they seemed.

After the Night of Long Shadows passed, the violence in the city did not abate. The King was forced to call upon the Red Cloak Battalion, an elite strike force, on more than one occasion. The Daask continued to bring in support from Droaam, not quite enough to be considred an invasion, but enough so that diplomatic talks between the nation and Breland became an ongoing concern. Rumors of war began filling the Korranberg Chronicle. The Boromar and Tyrants, meanwhile, battled the Daask over territory and, increasingly, as vengeance for other attacks. Within the month, it wasn't just foot soldiers dying, but leaders of each faction being assassinated.

In the midst of this chaos, Lysander summoned the Wolves to his home, where he made the rather surprising announcement that he and Arenydee were planning to be married. He was about to embark on a tour of Khorvaire, and wanted to share the news with his comrades before he left. Brand also was on his way out of town, as his new duties with House Orien would see him traveling around Khorvaire as well.

Desperate for help, The Watch sought the help of the adventurers' guilds. It seemed likely that there were ties to the various crime clans in these adventurers' guilds, so they never provided much information, they just sought help in terms of muscle. Even this, however, proved not enough, and the chaos in the streets increased. The information brokers like Phiarlan and Thuranni, not to mention security experts like Kundarak and Deneith, were making money hand over fist. However, with assaults, burglaries, kidnappings and worse going on, the City Council was forced to act. Led by an initiative from Councilor Sava Kharisa, on the 28th day of Zarantyr, the City Council of Sharn enacted a city-wide curfew. After dusk, citizens must have identity papers, and if they have any sort of criminal record, the Watch can run them in on charges of breaking curfew.

PEL
Once inside the home of Malfiore' LeQuande, the two visitors on the Night of Long Shadows revealed themselves to be Vadis, Pel's father, and Yelena, his new contact. Vadis was, as always, distant and cold, but Pel sensed his father's approval in his bold refusal to deal with Xain any further. Of course, he quickly learned why Yelena had taken this personally: Xain was her son, and Pel's questions about his loyalty had caused Xain to move from lieutenant and information broker to mere street-level informant again.

Vadis told Pel several things that night. First, he stressed that Yelena was a trusted ally, and that from now on, Pel was to accept that any word she said was as words directly from his lips. Pel wasn't sure, but he suspected that his father's relationship with Yelena might not be entirely chaste. Second, he told Pel that he was very serious about the truce with the Emerald Claw. He had managed to forestall assassination plans that were in place, and the Claw's eyes were everywhere. Building an information network with the same moral flexibility as the Claw, even with Phiarlan's help, would be years of work. Third, he told Pel that the Tyrants had joined with the Boromar against the Daask. It was a risky move, but thanks to Cord's actions, the Daask and Tyrants were already on bad terms, and now they could strengthen their ties to the Boromar while weakening their enemies. Vadis hoped that it might soon be time for them to make their move and return Pel to working directly for the Council. Vadis cautioned Pel that he had plans that would make this war work to his advantage, and that when the gang war had settled, Cord would no longer be a concern. After answering a few brief questions (put them in the comments below), he took his leave. Pel has not seen Vadis since that night, although he's seen plenty of Yelena, giving Pel orders from Vadis that have him running all over town, helping and hindering various factions.

During the second week of Zarantyr, one of the members of the Tyrants' Council was murdered in his chambers by a Daask assassin. He was a doppleganger, and Pel was able to learn that he was a supporter of Cord. Yelena took his place on the Council about a week later.

BRAND
Brand has become a Blade of Orien, apprenticed to Dahlia Hume d'Orien, the niece of Markus, the man who got him in. Dahlia is Master of Security for the Transportation Guild in Sharn. She is a talented combatant and a bit of a showoff, but she is driven largely by the dedication of her job. She has a taste for travel and adventure, and she often teases Brand that she'd like to switch jobs. "You can go where the House tells you and make sure everything's secure, and I'll live the life of the wandering adventurer!" She loves spending time with the Wandering Wolves and hearing tales of their adventures, and has become a regular fixture at The Drunken Dragon during her off hours.

Brand has begun taking protection work on caravans and Lightning Rail journeys, usually along with Dahlia. He has traveled extensively in Thrane and Zilargo, as well as working a caravan that traveled into the Eldeen Reaches. All told, he probably spent only four or five days in Sharn throughout the entire month, although he did manage to spend four days in the Eldeen Reaches seeing his mother, Rorsa and her pack.

Thanks to his work in Orien, Brand has also begun to make some contacts. In Sharn, his closest confidantes are Markus and Dahlia, but he also has worked a fair amount with Hammond Swith, a diviner wizard in the Ministry of Planning who has been instrumental in helping Markus choose new and safe routes for the caravans. Hammond is a bit distracted, seemingly living a few hours in the future most of the time, but he's been indespensable to Markus and plenty nice to Brand and Dahlia, and the four have formed a sort of "surrogate family" within the Orien House.

Brand has also learned more about exactly what happened with his father. Traega d'Orien was a Master of Scouting for the Transportation Guild in Passage. His job was to scout out potential new routes for caravans, finding where the Lightning Rail didn't go that it was most needed. He did most of his work in the Eldeen Reaches, where he had to walk the line between the environmentally conscious druids and the business-minded members of his own House. His success had gotten noticed, and he was next in line for the position of Viceroy overseeing the northern Eldeen region once his Uncle Diavus was promoted to Lord Seneschal of The Eldeen Reaches, something that was supposed to happen relatively soon.

Aeromus, the son of Diavus, was everything Traega wasn't. Sickly where Traega was strong, conniving where Traega was straightforward and unfortunately, devious where Traega was honest. Aeromus was a Minister of Planning for the Transportation Guild in Passage, and his lineage made him the next in line for Viceroy of Eldeen, while his lack of noteworthy accomplishments pushed his cousin Traega to the fore.

Traega's work in Eldeen was becoming more difficult, as a band of Ashbound terrorists were striking at his accomplishments in the area, claiming that they were destroying the delicate balance. After a couple months of this, evidence came to light that Traega had been funneling money from the Orien projects and into the hands of these Ashbound druids, in order to spend more time in Eldeen with his lover, a druid in the area named Sheryn Wayfinder. Traega's record was spotless enough, and the evidence not quite solid enough, that he was to be exiled rather than tried. Most don't know that on his way to the Eldeen Reaches, there was a failed assassination attempt, which drove Traega to go into hiding.

Ironically, Aeromus did not get the position of Viceroy, as political maneuvering above his head kept his father Diavus from advancing. Nevertheless, with Traega out of the way, Aeromus found it easier to rise in the ranks, and after about 10 years, he rose to the rank of Minister of Planning for the entire Aundarian region, and is now next in line for Viceroy of Central Aundair, a prestigious position that could easily lead to him becoming the next Lord Seneschal of Aundair.

The rest of the story, Brand already knows. How Aeromus found him, took him in, tried to teach him the ways of the House. Encouraged him to think of him as an "uncle." Brand was already uncomfortable with Aeromus' tutoring, and then Yancy Bathanel, a scout and caravan driver in the the Transportation Guild who had often worked with Traega, told Brand about Aeromus framing his father. He had no evidence, and scant few details, but his words had the ring of truth, much more than those of Aeromus. Yancy helped Brand fake his death and escape to Breland. Brand has of late learned that most of what Aeromus taught him about House politics was wrong, at least as regards House Orien, and that the business of the House is nowhere near as cutthroat as he made it seem.

LUGGOTH
On the second Night of Long Shadows, Luggoth was out in the madness, enjoying a little bit of a chance to cut loose in the city. He battled a couple of ogres in the street, and after he had driven them off, discovered that they weren't attacking anyone from the Boromar Clan, as he'd believed, but a 7-year-old shifter child named Borgoth. Moments after convincing the frightened and wounded boy to come out of his hiding place, Luggoth met the boy's sister, a beautiful 19-year-old shifter girl named Savannah. She was immensely grateful, and though poor, offered Luggoth a home-cooked meal and the company of his kind as thanks for saving her brother.

Luggoth went to their home, a poor one-room apartment in the Stoneyard district of Lower Northedge, and was served delicious and plentiful food. Savannah explained that their parents had both died in The Last War, and that she had taken care of their brother ever since. Savannah worked most days as a barmaid at The Bear's Rest. After dinner, Luggoth was shaken when he discovered that both Savannah and Borgoth were worshippers of the Silver Flame. She hastily explained that a shifter priest of the Silver Flame had taken them in during the War and brought them to Sharn. "Without the Flame," she explained, "We wouldn't be alive today." Savannah understands Luggoth's distrust of the Flame, but she claimed that those in her church were accepting of their people, good and kind folk who sought only to do the right thing. She invited him to attend a service, but even if he wasn't interested, she invited Luggoth to return whenever he wanted for a home-cooked meal. Whether or not Luggoth accepted is up to you, Nate.

Presumably, Maechen was also trying to spend some time with Luggoth to talk about the Prophecy and to try and figure out Luggoth's role in all of that. I'll let the two of you decide how you deal with that.

LYSANDER
Lysander's show is being heavily promoted by House Phiarlan. It's called "An Evening With Lysander d'Phiarlan" and promotes that he's an adventuring bard who has performed at notable theatres in Sharn, with helpful quotes from Baron Elvinor d'Phiarlan, King Boranel of Breland (wrangled through a deal thanks to the help the Wolves gave the Dark Lanterns), the owner of Gailan's in Sharn and a couple notable bards from his Circle of Song. Lysander is given free rein to perform songs, plays and stories of his choice, and provided local support from talented young Phiarlan performers at each performance. He is also being introduced to a network of House contacts and learning to serve as spymaster in some respects for some of these younger performers, handing out assignments from Baron Elvinor along the way. All of this is aimed not just at raising his profile and earning money for the House, but at getting notable personages to his shows so that he, Arenydee and other agents of Phiarlan can try to converse with them for information and/or ransack their homes and offices for information while they're at a performance.

The tour begins on Zarantyr 1 with a performance at Mizano Rupa's, a dinner theatre with a reputation for presenting up and comers. All of the Wolves are given complimentary tickets to the performance. If you'd like, you can roll a Performance skill roll for me to see how the first show goes off.

Lysander plays five more shows in Sharn before departing. On 2 Zarantyr, he plays another lunch and dinner show at Mizano Rupa's in Middle Menthis. On 3 Zarantyr, a lunch and dinner show at the Starfire Dragon, a competing dinner theatre. Then, on 4 Zarantyr, he plays an evening show in Upper Menthis at the famous Kavarrah Concert Hall. The crowd is a who's who of high society, allowing Lysander and Arenydee to do some significant information gathering.

After that, Lysander's trip takes him by Lightning Rail out to Wroat (Breland) for a performance on 6 Zarantyr, which is attended by a lot of the political powerhouses of Breland... rumors are that King Boranel and his family are in the audience, although they don't show up for the after-party. After spending two days there to do some information-gathering, they're back on the road to Starilaskur (Breland) for a performance on 11 Zarantyr, then a trip through Sterngate (Breland) and into Zolanberg in Zilargo for two performances on 13 Zarantyr and 14 Zarantyr. Then down to Korranberg (Zilargo) for a series of shows, running from 15 Zarantyr through 18 Zarantyr. During your time in Korranberg, you're to be doing a lot of research at the library, planting stories in the Chronicle and looking into the activities of The Trust. Given how much information there is in Zilargo in general and Korranberg in particular, you're there for another two days.

After that, it's travel by airship to Trolanport for two performances on Zarantyr 22, followed up by a day in town to look into the shipbuilding industry and heavy sea trade that happens in the port, as well as a stop off at the local House enclave for further instructions. Then you take off by airship for about three and a half days, traveling to the northern part of Aundair for a series of five performances in Fairhaven beginning on 27 Zarantyr and continuing until the end of the month. Fairhaven has a thriving underworld, a growing university and the Royal Court of Aundair, so it's a good place to impress and gather information.

The whole trip is paid for by the House: Lightning rail travel, standard accommodations, food, social activities, everything. They even cover the rental on Lysander's apartment while he's on the tour. In the second month of his tour, he'll travel south by lightning rail back through Aundair, Thrane and Breland and finally back to Sharn.

MAECHEN
Maechen has settled in to Sharn, and given that he plans to stay with the Wolves, he won't be able to make the journey back to Argonessen anytime too soon. It takes 28 days by chartered Lyrandar sailing vessel (and costs 8400 gp!), plus at least a week of inland travel, so it's not really practical for Maechen to make a physical journey back. He could also pay a House Orien scion to teleport him the 4000 miles for a price of 40,000 gp. Again, not really practical.

However, he will probably want to invest in scrolls of sending that will allow him to communicate, in 25 word bursts, with his dragon mentor. The scrolls cost 1,125 gp each (or 500 gp and 50 XP each, if bought from a friend in The Order of Aureon), or he can pay 250 gp per each communication by using House Sivis, although that's less private. Having a pair of sending stones made (keeping one and sending the other to his dragon mentor and allowing for more regular communication) would cost 630 gp and 51 xp, plus the cost of getting them there (there's that 8400 gp again, and it would take at least a month before the communications were available.) One way or the other, post in the comments how Maechen chooses to get in touch with his mentor, and what 25 word message he sends. He'll get one back in return.

He also has been working with the Esoteric Order of Aureon, researching spells and such. He has discovered that there are a few greedy and power-hungry members of the Order, but also that there are many noble spellcasters interested in information. Sadly, the power-hungry dominate the decision-making process, and Maechen has alienated some of them, but he has found a friendly niche group to spend time with and research with. As a 5th level spellcaster, he's one of only 25 members of the order of that power level in the Order, and thus brings with him a certain amount of clout. His circle of friends includes only three people ranking above him, 2 6th-level casters and a 7th-level caster. He can also choose to cast spells for money during his time, as three of his first level spells (Comprehend Languages, Feather Fall and Identity) and one of his third level spells (Tongues) are always in demand. Each day that he decides to spend casting, he'll make 45 gp/1st level spell and 135 gp/3rd level (counting the 10% donation back to the Order). What this means is that he could theoretically make up to 450 gp in a day, if he casts all his 1st and 3rd level spells, but this is a very rare occurrence. But if Maechen decides to do commercial spellcasting when he isn't researching his own spells or The Prophecy, he'll make about 2000 gp for each month.

He can also use the Order's library to buy new spells for his spellbook. There is a 50% chance he can find any spell from abjuration, divination, evocation, transmutation and universal, and a 25% chance he can find a spell from another school. Copying the spell to his spellbook will require a donation equal to half of (spell level x caster level x 25 gp).

After a few meetings and putting the decision off for some time, Luggoth will agree to accompany Savannah to a Sliver Flame service. he will, however wear his Traveler holy symbol outside his shirt and will most likely get stinking drunk and start a barfight afterward.

Also, Luggoth will continue to be annoyed with Maechen's shadowing attempts, but he will see getting the drop on the young scholar as something close to a game, a way to pass the time.

Luggoth attends a ceremony for the Silver Flame on 15 Zarantyr, after a couple weeks of stalling.

While there are some amongst the parishioners who give him dirty looks (mostly aimed at you wearing a holy symbol of the Dark Six), Luggoth is surprised to discover that this particular branch of the congregation is about 50% shifter, with the rest being human, gnome and a couple of half-elves. (He's not sure, but he thinks one of the half-elves might actually be a changeling.)

The priest, a human in his late thirties named Fargen, gives a folksy, upbeat sermon about doing good to others, encouraging those on the wrong path to seek the righteous one... basically very pacifistic, not at all what Luggoth has seen from the fanatical paladins. There's a little fire and brimstone in there, talk of evils walking amongst them daily, and cautions against the corruption of the material world aimed at the current gang war, but it's fairly uplifting, all told.

The ceremony also includes parishioners going up to the front to tell of good deeds they've accomplished or failures of morality that they would like the congregation to forgive them for. Savannah steps up and, without specifically naming you or indicating that you're in the service, talks about what you did for her brother, and how she believes you've got a good heart underneath a gruff, cynical exterior.

A few days later, on 22 Zarantyr, when you go to The Bear's Rest to have a drink and talk to Savannah, you see her talking to a scummy looking human at the bar. He seems to know her, and she seems more than a little frightened of him, but before you can do anything or say anything, he ducks out a side entrance. When you confront her, she tells you he's an unruly regular who thinks that barmaid service ought to extend to the rooms upstairs, and that she can take care of herself.

This last is delivered in a tone much less serene, and even a little bit annoyed, than you're used to seeing her use.

Message to Yanesh Hite, From Lord Brand d’Orien:

My friend, as we discussed during our travels in Xen’drik, I have returned to House Orien now that my memory has returned. I have begun building ties within the House and have a proposal in mind – a business scheme. It is my hope to build an alliance between House Orien and one of the Native’s contacts in Xen’drik. I recently spent time with Hackrazet and had a chance to see his business firsthand. I wonder, would Hackrazet be interested in an exclusive contract to provide House Orien with Eternal Rations for House Orien’s many traveling caravans? House Orien would benefit from a steady supply of the spoil resistant rations for their caravans, perhaps at a stable price. Hackrazet would enjoy a standing order of increased product, making more money in a more predictable fashion.

As an added benefit, perhaps a garrison of Orien soldiers could be stationed on Hackrazet’s farm. This could be of aid to Hackrazet given his recent problems with not-so-local predators and would be helpful should any other “competitors” target his business. Of course, I would personally serve as liaison between the House and Hackrazet, with the help of Orien teleporters. Perhaps this could be the first step in building a line of supply between House Orien, the Native and our other contacts in Xen’drik. I look forward to hearing your reply. Once we work out a few details on our end, I shall present this proposal to my contacts within Orien.

Best regards,
Lord Brand d’Orien

Pel will be very busy indeed over these next few weeks. Among his activities, in addition to whatever little errands he’s running for Vadis, are the following:

1. Seek out other followers of the Traveler in Sharn. Upon finding a congregation (if there is such a thing), he may join, and if he attends a service, invite Luggoth, and Lysander (if he is available and whom he is gently attempting to convert) along as well. Whether or not he can find a like-minded group, he will set up a small altar in a discreet room of LeQuande’s apartment.

2. After the curfew is imposed, he will use his forgery skill (+5 and taking 10) to create some false i.d. papers to be sold to a few of his criminal contacts for whatever the going rate would be for such a thing. Let me know how much he makes.

3. Discreetly pass along a few useful tidbits of intel to Councilor Kharisa, depending on what comes his way, that could be used by her against the Daask, and sound her out on the situation in general and see what she lets slip (roll for gather info +11). He’ll bring her a nice bottle of wine and may also purchase some art from her gallery. That is, if it’s not ridiculously expensive.

4. He will purchase and cast a scroll of Commune to, ah, commune with the Traveler. Commune is described as follows:

“You contact your deity—or agents thereof —and ask questions that can be answered by a simple yes or no. You are allowed one such question per caster level. The answers given are correct within the limits of the entity’s knowledge. “Unclear” is a legitimate answer, because powerful beings of the Outer Planes are not necessarily omniscient. In cases where a one-word answer would be misleading or contrary to the deity’s interests, a short phrase (five words or less) may be given as an answer instead.

The spell, at best, provides information to aid character decisions. The entities contacted structure their answers to further their own purposes. If you lag, discuss the answers, or go off to do anything else, the spell ends.”

Commune is a 5th level spell, caster level 9, which would, I assume, give Pel 9 questions to ask – correct me if I’m wrong. He will have to make a caster level check to cast for which he needs to roll a 7 or better to succeed. The scroll costs 1625gp and the spell costs 100xp to cast (unless that is figured into the scroll cost). This will be done post-Lysander’s dinner, and Pel’s questions are forthcoming.

Speaking of questions, Pel has several for his father Vadis, some of which would be rude to ask. What he will ask instead (sensing motive and using action dice if needed) is this:

“How do you see this conflict resolving itself? The Daask are rather…intractable, and have a virtually infinite source of reserves from Droaam. How can there be hope of success, even with the Tyrants and Boromar combined, against such a force as that?”

“How long have you been negotiating with the Emerald Claw?* Can you really guarantee they wont strike against my companions and I? I would urge you once again to reconsider aligning yourself with them. They are fanatics and cannot possibly be trusted. You may find it more expedient to do so now or in the short term, but I truly believe Phiarlan would be the wiser choice for a more lasting relationship. And I am quite certain they would be interested in one.”

Pel does not give voice to it, but hopes his father understands that he could never be asked to work with or benefit the Claw in any way.

“How many people know where I live now, for cryin’ out loud? Do I need to move again?”

* The answer to the “how long” question, if believed, is mentally crosschecked against the date the Schema was stolen.

I don’t think Pel is current on the blog. It shows a total of gold, letters of credit and gems as being worth 10,923gp. I think whatever we gained from our last outing needs to be added, and the cost of a number of scrolls, the quick-draw scroll case and perhaps some other purchases deducted. I don’t have that stuff at work today but will get it all updated soon.

By the way, Pel, I have discovered something that may be of interest to you. It is only hearsay and rumor, but I have heard talk of worshippers of the Traveler within the House Orien. Others might not even pick up on the odd phrase or mention of rituals related to the Traveler, but after spending time with you I have recognized the clues. It would be interesting, indeed, if you were to find allies within my house. Perhaps the Traveler himself will aid me in bringing my father home from across the sea.

Sent by Sivis Message Station to Brand d'Orien on 3 Zarantyr, received when he next arrives back in Sharn on 10 Zarantyr:

Message to Lord Brand d'Orien, from Yanesh Hite:

I am glad to hear that you are well. Our organization agrees that the proposal has possibilities, although The Native cautions you to be wary when dealing with one such as Hackrazet.

We have made contact with Hackrazet, and he is amenable. His only question is how much supply Orien needs and at what price. He is very interested in having Orien soldiers detailed to the farm.

Best,

Yanesh Hite

1. The Traveler: You discover that the most prominent congregation devoted to the Traveler operates in Dragoneyes in Lower Tavick's Landing, in the heart of the Tyrants' base of operations. However, the leader of the faith, a doppleganger named Chance who runs the most sophisticated casino in Sharn (also named Chance), is not a member of the Tyrants. Indeed, he deliberately keeps his congregation above the guilds and politics, although he does respect the guild. Your father doesn't like him much, but doesn't have much of a specific reason for his dislike. Chance is impressed by your devotion to the Traveler, and your tale of how you came by it, and invites you to join the congregation, although he stresses that when you are at services, you are a priest of the Traveler, not a member of The Tyrants. You also hear through Brand that there is a sect within House Orien that worships The Traveler, although neither of you are quite well connected enough to find out anything more just yet.

2. False ID Papers: At DC 15, these are good (but not great) false papers. Enough to fool a distracted member of The Watch, but not able to withstand any serious scrutiny. Good for petty thieves and those who just wish to flout the curfew, but not for those who would rely on being seen as legal members of society in order to perform more nefarious schemes. As such, the sales are relatively cheap and not frequent, but you do sell enough to make about 75 gp.

3. Councilor Kharisa: Kharisa is a crusader, a realist on one hand but someone with her hand in various fringe politics on the other. If she suspected how deep your ties to the Tyrants run, she probably wouldn't speak much to you anymore. She has many enemies amongst the Boromar, however, who have tried numerous times to buy her off and a couple of times to kill her. You do learn that the Council has begun making plans to put bounties on the heads of the major criminal gangs, and considered naming them enemies of the crown, so as to increase pressure on them. Your father is one of the names on that list. Kharisa is concerned about the civil liberties implications, however, and is battling against it, although her history with the Boromar is weakening her resolve. You can buy a nice, quiet piece of art from the gallery for about 50-75 gp, or something fairly impressive starting at 150 gp and running up to the thousands of gold.

4. Commune: Your reading is correct, you would get nine questions, and would have to roll a 7 or better, spend the gold and spend the 100 XP. Give me your questions and I'll give you your answers.

Questions for Vadis (You can roll a Sense Motive for each of these, if you like):
1. “How do you see this conflict resolving itself? The Daask are rather…intractable, and have a virtually infinite source of reserves from Droaam. How can there be hope of success, even with the Tyrants and Boromar combined, against such a force as that?”

"Ah, but their ties to Droaam are a weakness as well. Droaam is not a recognized nation by the Crown of Breland, and the only reason Breland doesn't simply invade is fear of sparking another great war. However, if their city is thrown into chaos by a foreign power willfully trodding on their soil, the Crown will act. And he Daask will be told to back off if their actions endanger their home nation or their hag leadership."

"I have plans that will work nicely with these conflicts. I can't tell you all the details, not just yet. Suffice to say, it serves my purposes to have the criminal gangs at each others' throats, even the one that we are a part of."

"The talks with the Claw began several months ago (*after the schema was stolen)... there are no guarantees in this life, you know that. And certainly I don't expect the Claw to be a long-term ally. But for right now, an alliance with them is a benefit to my plans, and I have assurances from high up in the Claw leadership that there will be no attempts on the Wandering Wolves. If they break their word, they know that I will be able to expose a great many of their operations. House Phiarlan is a worthwhile alliance, but the Houses are powerful, and might just as easily subsume the Tyrants. I believe for now we are best keeping our relations with them personal and small, such as your friendship with Lysander."

3. “How many people know where I live now, for cryin’ out loud? Do I need to move again?”

"Yelena and I took great pains to arrange convincing cover identities for ourselves before we came here. No one will think anything of a merchant entertaining such personages as we represent. As for the truth of where you live, that is a secret shared by only myself and Yelena. And if you need to ask how I knew, you clearly don't know me as well as you should."

To Brand:

Ah, my friend, that is interesting news indeed, and, if one considers it, quite sensible, as travel is the Traveler's domain as well as House Orien's. If you learn more I'd be most pleased to hear it. As to your father, if the Traveler's wills it, I would be most honored to be the instrument by which he assists you in your aims. We should certainly speak more on this again.

Randy - here's some follow up:

1. The Traveler: Pel will accept Chance's offer to join the congregation and reassures him that he understands the necessity of keeping wordly business out of the spiritual realm. If the preists have it avaialble, Pel will purchase the commune scroll there and make a 500gp donation. He'll also inquire if there's anything in particular the Churh (does it have a name?) is in need of at this time.

2. Cha-ching!

3. Kharisa: Pel will purchase something nice in the range of 200gp from the gallery.

4. Commune: rolled a 7, exactly what was needed, for the caster level check. I'll put the questions in a seperate post.

For the Vadis questions my sense motive rolls were:

1. 17
2. 33 (used an action die there)
3. 19

Updated Pel including gold and experience spent on scrolls and as noted above.

1. The Traveler: There isn't a name for the church, as it is all kept fairly underground, although there are secret hand signals and pass phrases so that members of the congregation can talk to one another somewhat in public.

Chance is unable to create a commune spell himself, but he is able to procure one given a few days' warning.

2. On all three questions, you get the same general evasiveness but basic sincerity you usually get when talking to your father. You're not sure if it's because he's a talented liar or because he's telling the truth, but you feel fairly certain that he is telling the truth about the deal he's made with the Claw, at least.

Lysander throws himself into the tour and all of its aspects with a renewed vigor. He has a plan for the future and someone to share it with. He has friends in danger, as is he, and enemies to humiliate. Life could not conceivably be better.

After a solid opening performance (28) at Mizano Rupa’s, with my friends in attendance then good performances for several nights, he performs at Kavarrah Concert Hall. It is a near flawless performance (32). The after-show activities also prove to be effectual (Gather Info: Lysander-27, Arenydee did not fare as well—3 plus skill). (Do I need to build her, Randy?)

The stop in Wroat was much fun, although Lysanders performance was good (22) his info gathering was hampered by a fine brandy that he encountered (15) Arenydee however, proved herself a worthy partner and heard many useful rumors (17 plus skill).

Korranberg was a delight marked by solid performances (28, 20, 26) and decent info gathering (17, and 18+skill, she’s good!, specifically looking for activities of the Trust). And Lysander befriended a Gnomish Librarian who he hoped would prove a useful comrade in the future.

Troalnport netted generally good audiences and performances, information was plentiful on the trade situation (25) and (10 plus skill). Then there was a quick contact with the House Enclave.

Then, in Fairhaven, Aundair it happened. Lysander finished and performed the first Cycle of the Wolf , the first part of his masterwork epic (natural 20, 33 total). The rest of the stay was bliss with great performances (high 20’s) and much information (26, 14 plus skill). That and the addition of an up and coming member of Fairhavens underworld proved for a most delightful and profitable stay. He also order some more of that cheese.

The end of the first month.

We do like that cheese. ;)

<< The after-show activities also prove to be effectual (Gather Info: Lysander-27, Arenydee did not fare as well-11). (Do I need to build her, Randy?) >>

Nope. Arenydee has now been posted atop the blog, along with some tidbits about her history which you now know. If there's more you want to know and/or investigate, comment either here or on her entry.

At any rate, after your performance you meet a few people and learn a few things:

An ogre (!) scholar named Karg who works as an academic at Morgrave University. He's fairly intelligent (for an Ogre) and friendly, although he does have a greatsword strapped to his back that he won't part with.

Lord Jairan ir'Dain, the Cyran ambassador to Breland. He's a proud but pleasant man, but you can't help notice that his glamerweave clothes are looking a little threadbare, and despite his assurances that "New Cyre can grow peacefully and well" you can't help but feel a little bit sorry for him.

Maza Thadian, a rich elf who is Upper Northedge's representative to the Council.

Savia Potellas, the Councilor from Lower Menthis, who owns a brothel in Firelight. You learn that she is tired of paying tribute to the Boromars and Tyrants, but is afraid to move against them. However, the recent gang war has her thinking it might be time to make some kind of move, although what that move might be not even she knows.

Sava Kharisa, naturally, attends both of your performances and is very complimentary on both.

You hear rumors that almost an entire squadron of The Watch was killed in a run-in with some kind of creature down in The Cogs, and that the survivor, driven insane by the encounter, is insisting that it was some kind of psionically-active warforged.

You also learn a variety of information such as business plans, people coming to or leaving town, planned votes in the Council and such that will be of use to the House.

<< The stop in Wroat was much fun, although Lysanders performance was good (22) his info gathering was hampered by a fine brandy that he encountered (15) Arenydee however, proved herself a worthy partner and heard many useful rumors (25). >>

In Wroat, you met several members of the King's Court, as well as having a brief chat with Viceroy Surael d'Phiarlan, Lord Seneschal of Breland and mistress of the Demesne of Motion. You and Arenydee heard rumors that the King's Dark Lanterns are investigating the gang war in Sharn, and that the King believes it might be the beginning of an invasion by Droaam. A fringe conspiracy theory even holds that the King's Dark Lanterns fomented the conflict in order to justify declaring war on Droaam in retaliation for the murder of King Boranel's wife, which common gossip has was ordered by the Hags of Droaam.

You also learn that the terrorist organization The Swords of Liberty attempted to assassinate Kor Ir'Wynarn, the King's brother. No one knows if Kor was injured or not, but there are rumors that two days later, a shadowy force eradicated a supposed Sword stronghold in the city of Xandrar, in the process killing some two dozen citizens of Breland. Some of whom might not have been Swords of Liberty.

You met Haydith ir'Wynarn, 16-year-old sister of the King of Karrnath, who is the adopted daughter of King Boranel as part of a political exchange. You also met her bodyguard, an impressive warforged paladin named Three. Haydith shared in confidence that she worries about her brother, King Kaius, thinking that politics has driven much of the love out of him.

<< Korranberg was a delight marked by solid performances (28, 20, 26) and decent info gathering (17, and 26, she’s good!, specifically looking for activities of the Trust). And Lysander befriended a Gnomish Librarian who he hoped would prove a useful comrade in the future. >>

You learn that The Trust seems to be relatively benevolent, for all its secretive goals. There have been no large-scale atrocities or scandals attributed to The Trust in all the time of its existence. Although that could be due to a skill in covering such things up.

You manage to learn the identity of three operatives of The Trust, which will be very useful information for Phiarlan to have. Arenydee also hears rumors that The Trust is closing in on a member of the Council of Nine in Korranberg who is believed to have ties to the conspiracy organization The Aurum, but you are unable to discover the name of that council member.

<< Trolanport netted generally good audiences and performances, information was plentiful on the trade situation (25) and (18). Then there was a quick contact with the House Enclave. >>

You hear rumors that a small group of gnomish shipwrights are working on a new kind of ship that would be even faster than the Wind Galleons of Lyrandar, perhaps augmented by teleportation magic. Rumor has it that House Orien is bankrolling this operation, as part of a bid to expand their domination of Khorvaire's land-bound transport into overseas travel as well.

Other than that, you learn a great deal of trade information and insider trading type secrets that are of little use to you but great use to House Phiarlan for sale and trade.

<< Then, in Fairhaven, Aundair it happened. Lysander finished and performed the first Cycle of the Wolf , the first part of his masterwork epic (natural 20, 33 total). The rest of the stay was bliss with great performances (high 20’s) and much information (26, 22). >>

The most juicy tidbit of information you pick up are rumors that an agent of the Dreaming Dark visited House Orien in Passage. It's a rumor, and nobody actually knows the identity of this agent, who he or she supposedly met or to what end, but it's interesting.

You also hear a lot about the black market in Fairhaven, and hear many people suggesting that Queen Aurala is ambitious, and hopes to one day become Queen of a reunited Galifar.

In addition to buying more of that cheese, you are gifted a dozen bottles of excellent Aundarian wine from the owners of several wine-making operations. Each of them assures you that their wine will be the toast of Aundair in the coming year, and suggests that a bard who worked their brand into his tales and songs would be on the cutting edge of culture.
